Tho Nhuom Street
Whether it’s because of their cultural riches, shopping opportunities, or entertainment hubs, the 36 old streets and guilds of the Hanoi Old Quarter continue to attract visitors at first sight. Among these, Tho Nhuom Street remains a popular spot for photography due to its diverse architecture, vibrant cuisine, and notable tourist sites.
Tho Nhuom Street stretches from Hang Bong Street to Ba Trieu Street, intersecting with Hai Ba Trung, Quan Su, Ly Thuong Kiet, and Quang Trung Streets. The street measures approximately 930 meters in length.
History
According to legend, the tradition of dyeing cloth was a key industry that characterized the early sections of this street, dating back to the onset of the Nguyen Dynasty. Most professional dyers were from the villages of Lieu Xa, Lieu Xuyen, and Van Hoang.
During the French colonial period, the segment from Hang Bong to Hai Ba Trung was referred to as rue des Tenturiers, while the remainder was known as rue Jean Soler. Today, Tho Nhuom Street attracts numerous visitors with its array of upscale restaurants, vibrant food stalls, popular coffee chains, nightclubs, and a variety of hotels.
What to see
The street is brimming with remarkable historical sites, making it challenging to select the highlights. A must-visit for history enthusiasts is No. 90 Tho Nhuom, the former residence of Mr. Tran Phu, the first General Secretary of the Indochinese Communist Party. This historical site, which served as a base for political meetings, is managed by the Hanoi Vestiges and Beauty Spot Management Board.
