Ma May
Stretching a modest distance of nearly 300 meters, Ma May Street now stands among the few streets that showcase some of the most historic houses in Hanoi. Typically, streets beginning with "hang" indicate traditional crafts and businesses from the past. However, Ma May Street is particularly unique as it vividly reflects the cultural vibrancy and architectural essence of the capital in the early 20th century.
This street accounts for about 10% of the ancient houses in the area and is celebrated as a miniature representation of the Old Quarter within its confines. The name Ma May is derived from the combination of Hang Ma and Hang May. Presently, Ma May Street extends from Hang Buom to Hang Bac.
Unlike the straight paths found throughout the Old Quarter, Ma May Street winds its way around small houses, enhancing its charming appeal. For food enthusiasts, the establishment at number 25, run by artisan Anh Tuyet, is a must-visit. Here, you can immerse yourself in Hanoi's culinary delights during the cooking lessons she conducts. The house, constructed entirely of wood, recreates a warm and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of urban homes from days gone by.
Most notably, the house at number 87 has witnessed the ebbs and flows of history since the early 19th century. This residence retains its vintage architectural style, reminiscent of figures in Bui Xuan Phai's renowned paintings. Visitors will find an array of intriguing items crafted from wood, bamboo, and coconut shells within its walls. In addition to these artifacts, guests can also enjoy "Ca Tru," a form of traditional singing, on select evenings throughout the week.
