Ho Hoan Kiem Street
Ho Hoan Kiem sits in the heart of Hanoi, yet it remains a hidden gem that many might overlook due to its brief length in a spacious area. This street, measuring a mere 45 meters, is recognized as the shortest street in Hanoi and was historically known as Hang Che.
During the French colonial period, it was referred to as Philharmonique, translating to Music Festival. After the country's independence in 1945, it was renamed Ho Hoan Kiem and is now located in the bustling Hang Bac Ward of the Hoan Kiem District.
Despite its small stature, Ho Hoan Kiem is fondly remembered by numerous generations of Hanoians, especially among the younger crowd with a penchant for street food. The street is particularly famous for its delectable specialty: papaya salad with beef jerky, a dish that is truly deserving of all the accolades it receives—spicy, mouth-watering, and unique.
Moreover, there are intriguing aspects about the street's layout. Even with its limited length and only a few houses lining either side, many residences carry extended house numbers from Dinh Tien Hoang Street or Cau Go Street. Consequently, only one house on the even-numbered side (No. 28) and one on the odd-numbered side (No. 23) bear the official address of Ho Hoan Kiem Street.
Though diminutive, Ho Hoan Kiem Street remains a worthwhile destination for those seeking to indulge in architecture, delightful culinary experiences, souvenirs, and the vibrant local culture.
