Hang Non - Street of Conical Hats
In comparison with other streets in the nearby area, Hang Non street has a total length of 216 meters, beginning at Duong Thanh street and ending at the Hang Quat-Hang Hom T-junction.
The present-day Hang Non street was once just a segment of the larger Hang Non of the past. The section near Duong Thanh street was newly developed with the opening of the new road, while the stretch from Hang Thiec to Hang Hom was previously known as Ma Vi street.
Historically, this bustling street featured numerous shops specializing in traditional leaf-made conical hats. Up until the early years of the 20th century, conical hats were a common accessory for both Vietnamese women and men, especially among the locals in Hanoi. Men typically wore hats with silver or bronze tops, while women had various options ranging from standard to high-quality hats. Laborers often opted for the "non ba tam" or "pan hat," crafted from fan-palm leaves, whereas the more expensive "non quai thao" was favored by those who could afford it. However, by the late 1910s, the popularity of conical hats waned as umbrellas and scarves became the preferred headwear.
Today, only individuals engaged in manual labor continue to wear conical hats. Consequently, shops selling conical hats have been replaced by other businesses. For instance, some shops now specialize in painted wooden clogs, like the well-known My Sinh and My Thinh stores. In the present day, Hang Non street bustles with activity, particularly at the corner of Duong Thanh, where a lively café scene has emerged, providing a popular meeting spot to kick off the day. The central and latter parts of the street are packed with trendy fashion stores catering to the youth of today.
