Hang Luoc - Street Of Combs
Hang Luoc Street connects its northern end to Hang Cot Street. From there, the street extends to the intersection of four streets: Hang Ma, Cha Ca, Hang Dong, and Thuoc Bac, running alongside the banks of the To Lich River. For this reason, Hang Luoc Street was historically referred to as “Song To Lich” Street, with “song” meaning “river.”
Originating from the estuary where it meets the Red River, the To Lich flows in an east-west direction before curving northwest at Hang Ca Street, where it traces the boundaries of Hanoi's ancient walls, forming a natural trench that historically protected the citadel.
In earlier times, residents of Hang Dong Street relied on a bamboo bridge to cross over to the market. This bridge was eventually replaced with a large culvert, leading to the street also being known as Cong Cheo - Hang Luoc (with “cong cheo” meaning “skew culvert”). The name “Hang Luoc” itself is attributed to the street’s historical significance as a center for the sale of combs, both at retail and wholesale. Locally-sourced wooden and horn combs were brought here for commerce.
Hang Luoc was once a bustling trading area until the To Lich River gradually diminished. Following this decline, residents adapted by engaging with the Dong Xuan Market for their livelihoods. Today, Hang Luoc Street is lined with various shops selling a wide range of goods. During the Lunar New Year, the street becomes a vibrant space where vehicles are restricted, transforming it into a lively flower market. This annual event, filled with blossoms and cheerful faces, has become a cherished tradition for the local community, marking Hang Luoc as a popular destination during Tet.
