Hàng Đậu - Street Of Grains

Hang Dau Street is approximately 272 meters long, situated in Dong Xuan Ward, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi. Running in an east-west direction, this short street extends from Tran Nhat Duat Street to Van Xuan Park on Phan Dinh Phung Street. Historically, the street was known for its numerous shops selling various types of beans (such as mung beans, soybeans, and black beans) and soy products (including tofu and bean sprouts). These products were traditionally harvested by local residents living near the banks of the Red River. During the French colonial era, the street was referred to as "Rue des Graines," meaning "Street of Grains." Following the August Revolution in 1945, the government restored its original name, Hang Dau.

In 2025, Hang Dau Street no longer hosts shops selling beans; instead, many of these businesses have shifted to selling auto parts, motorcycles, pharmaceuticals, mobile phones, and aquarium supplies. The stalls that once sold beans have moved to Tran Nhat Duat Street.

A notable landmark on Hang Dau Street is the Hang Dau Water Tower, located at the bustling junction of Hang Dau, Hang Than, Quan Thanh, Phan Dinh Phung, Hang Cot, and Hang Giay Streets. Built in 1894 using recycled stone, this impressive structure resembles a fortress tower and features three stories, with a diameter of 19 meters and a height of 25 meters. The tower is topped by a cone-shaped roof and is adorned with small Gothic-style windows. Adjacent to the water tower, Hang Dau Park boasts a spacious area filled with flowers, trees, and a large fountain. During Tet, local florists from nearby Hang Luoc Street often bring their floral arrangements and ornamental trees to this park for sale, enhancing the charming atmosphere of Hanoi on this street.
