Hang Bo - Street Of Baskets
In the French colonial period, Hang Bo was known as Rue Des Paniers.
Hang Bo Street spans a total length of 272 meters, connecting with Hang Bac Street through the intersections with Hang Dao and Hang Ngang. It also intersects with Luong Van Can and Hang Can, ending at the junction of Hang Thiec and Bat Dan in Hoan Kiem District.
During the French colonial period, the street was known as Rue Des Paniers, a name officially changed to Hang Bo following the August Revolution. Historically, the central stretch of Hang Bo Street was lined with shops selling a variety of bamboo products. During the spring season leading up to Tet, the street would come alive with bustling crowds and an array of bamboo baskets available for purchase.
Before 1945, Hang Bo Street also served as a cultural hub for those who appreciated the fine art of calligraphy, especially during the Tet holiday. The sidewalks transformed into vibrant displays adorned with red paper and black ink, as talented calligraphers from provinces such as Ha Dong, Nam Dinh, and Bac Ninh gathered to showcase their literary skills.
Additionally, artisans from Dong Ho village and Hang Trong Street would bring their colorful folklore paintings to Hang Bo, offering beautiful decorations for the spring festivities. The street was also renowned for its incense-making household businesses, whose quality products were celebrated nationwide for their sweet, aromatic fragrances.
As of 2025, Hang Bo Street has undergone considerable transformation, now featuring a mix of modern buildings and diverse shops. By day, visitors can find a variety of haberdashery items, while evenings bring the delightful aroma of grilled squid and other street food vendors, making it a vibrant destination for both locals and tourists.
