Dong Xuan Street
With the bustling atmosphere of the city's largest market, Dong Xuan Street has remained a captivating destination for explorers and shoppers alike over the years.
Dong Xuan Street spans approximately 170 meters, starting from Hang Giay Street and crossing the intersection at Hang Chieu and Ngo Gach Streets, ultimately leading to Hang Duong Street heading towards Hoan Kiem Lake. This street is famous for its main highlight—Dong Xuan Market—where a wide array of goods converge, offering endless opportunities for exploration and joy.
History
Dong Xuan Street was established on the historical grounds of two villages: Dong Xuan on the odd side and Nhiem Trung on the even side, within what was once Tho Xuong District centuries ago. In the mid-19th century, Nhiem Trung Village merged with Hoa Dan Village to form Phuong Trung Village.
During the French colonial era, the street was known as Hang Gao Street (Rue du Riz), and the name Dong Xuan Street came into popular use after 1945. Although narrow, this street buzzes with activity, with stalls lining both sides filled with a diverse range of goods. Dong Xuan Market, located midway to the northeast, has become the largest market for both wholesalers and retailers in Hanoi and surrounding areas.
Over the years, Dong Xuan Street has undergone significant changes but has never wavered from its important role in the community.
