Vietnam Weather

While July features hot and sunny days, summer floods have been known to occur in August. In particular, Hanoi is notorious for its historic floods, notably the severe flooding in 2008. This week, the weather in Hanoi is proving challenging for travelers with sudden heavy rain showers and thunderstorms, creating an unpredictable climate. While today Hanoi is sunnier, it is wise to expect more rain within the next few hours and throughout the weekend.

These rain showers are not exclusive to the north; they also affect southern regions such as Ho Chi Minh City, which is expected to remain wet all week. Though the weather may not appeal to beach enthusiasts or hikers, it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy a quiet moment with a cup of Vietnamese coffee or a delicious hotpot in cozy corners of both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Rain in July (or in the lunar calendar, the month of July) can be attributed to a well-known Vietnamese fairy tale, “Nguu Lang, Chuc Nu.” This tale tells of two star-crossed lovers who are separated and can only reunite once a year on the 7th of July (according to the lunar calendar). Their joyous reunion brings forth tears, which in turn results in the heavy rains of July.
