Tet holiday expected to last for 9 days

Tet, the most important holiday of a year for Vietnamese, is approaching fast. Most businesses are busy finishing up the financial year and deciding bonuses for employees, while people in the country and city are already planning on what to wear and how to spend their vacation.

Tet, the most significant holiday of the year for Vietnamese people, is fast approaching. Businesses are busy wrapping up the financial year and determining employee bonuses, while individuals in both urban and rural areas are making plans for their attire and vacation activities.

Businesses, individuals, and tourists should reassess their plans due to a recent proposal by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) to extend Tet festivities to nine days this year. If approved, Vietnamese workers in government agencies and private companies will receive time off from January 20 to January 28, 2025. The following week, workdays will resume from Monday, January 29, to Saturday, February 3, 2025, to compensate for one lost day of the previous week.

How the decision may affect you?

If you are traveling to Vietnam during the stated period, it is advisable to apply for a visa as early as possible. It typically takes 5-7 business days for a visa to be processed by Vietnamese embassies abroad and 2-3 days for visa on arrival options. Be aware that all Vietnamese entities abroad, including embassies and consulates, will observe the Tet holiday, meaning no visas can be issued during that time. Without a valid visa, entry into Vietnam will not be permitted, potentially leading to the cancellation of your flight and tours.

If you are conducting business with a Vietnamese partner, keep the extended holiday in mind. It’s best to start the new year on a positive note, filled with smiles and greetings, while steering clear of hard bargaining or negotiations. Many Vietnamese businesses believe that the tone set in the first few days of the year influences the entire year, so they tend to avoid disputes during this time.

If you are an expat working in Vietnam, this is an excellent opportunity for travel. You may consider returning home for a visit or exploring neighboring countries to take full advantage of the nine-day break.
