The market was established in 1889, showcasing a captivating blend of ancient and modern French architectural styles. Over the years, it has evolved into a popular attraction for both local traders and international tourists. Dong Xuan Market not only functions as a busy commercial hub but also stands as a testament to Vietnam's historical resilience and a point of pride for Hanoi's residents.
History
Dong Xuan Market evolved from the earlier Bach Ma Market and Cau Dong Market, two historical markets at the Thang Long Citadel. Following decrees from the French authorities aimed at consolidating various smaller markets, Dong Xuan Market was inaugurated in 1889. Its riverside location facilitated the steady flow of goods via boats, establishing it as a major trading center in the capital.
During the first years of the resistance war in 1947, the market experienced significant disruption due to the ongoing conflict. A devastating fire in 1994 led to substantial damage, resulting in a reconstruction project that expanded the market to nearly 14,000 m² across three floors, hosting over 2,000 stalls.
With its rich history linked to critical events in Vietnam’s timeline, Dong Xuan Market encapsulates both the material and spiritual heritage of Hanoi, reinforcing its status as an enduring symbol of the capital.
The Market's Architecture
Dong Xuan Market exhibits striking French architectural features, highlighted by a modern dome design and a facade that showcases three triangular sections (originally five), designed with openings resembling a honeycomb. This distinctive architecture makes a bold impression on visitors from the moment they arrive.

As the largest market in Hanoi, with over 2,100 stalls and 71 kiosks offering a wide variety of products, Dong Xuan Market attracts thousands of visitors every day, who come for shopping, photography, and enjoying the local cuisine.
