Rock Music in Vietnam
US soldiers brought Rock and Roll into Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh city) when it was the trend during the 60s.
US soldiers introduced Rock and Roll to Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) during the 1960s, a time when the genre was gaining popularity worldwide. Initially, Vietnamese audiences reacted with skepticism, viewing it as foreign music associated with American military presence. Over time, however, Rock has established a significant following among Vietnamese youth, highlighted by the emergence of influential bands such as The Enterprise, The Rocking Stars, The Phoenix, Metronome, The Wall, and Microwave.
As of 2025, Rock music maintains a niche presence in the Vietnamese music landscape, holding approximately 10% of the overall market share. Despite its size, it remains a beloved genre, featuring prominently in prestigious music competitions such as Vietnam Idol, "Sao Mai Diem Hen," and "Bai Hat Viet."
Vietnam’s music scene continues to be influenced by international styles, particularly British and American rock. Nevertheless, several local artists are successfully merging Western rock with Vietnamese musical elements. Notable examples include Nguyen Cuong, who is known for "Tay Nguyen Rock," and Pham Anh Khoa, who creatively adapts Vietnamese traditional folk songs into Rock genres, a style commonly referred to as "Rock Dan Ca."
