Quan Ho - Alternate Singing

Quan ho is a genre of Vietnamese folk music that continues to be performed during spring festivals in northern Vietnam. Bac Ninh province, recognized as the birthplace of this traditional music, saw its first recordings in the 13th century. Quan ho was officially designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009, highlighting its importance to Vietnamese culture. This genre is known for its meaningful lyrics, beautiful melodies, and unique performance style.

Quan Ho Folk Singing

In a typical Quan ho performance, groups of female and male singers take turns singing to one another. This call-and-response format allows singers to engage in musical challenges, with each team responding with equal creativity. The lyrics predominantly revolve around themes of love and emotional longing, offering a rare cultural space where men and women are afforded equal footing. This vibrant exchange allows young adults to express their feelings genuinely, often prioritizing emotional connection over material wealth or social status in romantic relationships.

More than just a folk music style, Quan ho resembles a competitive game where teams of singers showcase their lyrical and melodic talents to captivate audiences. The exquisite melodies and poetically rich lyrics often render accompaniment instruments unnecessary, as the musical expression stands beautifully on its own.
