Hat Chau Van

Originating from the Red River Delta and dating back to the 16th century, Chau Van is a traditional Vietnamese folk music genre classified as ritual music, performed during the "len dong" practice, the Vietnamese version of East Asian spirit mediumship. Specifically, Chau Van serves as incantation music, aimed at helping individuals reconnect with spirits through a captivating blend of a religious atmosphere, rhythmic patterns, and evocative lyrics.

Characterized by its unique combination of trance singing and dancing, this religious music is widely employed to honor the beneficent deities and venerated national heroes, who are embodied by mediums during performances. While the musical style of Ca Tru is known for its melodious and gentle tones, Chau Van presents a stark contrast; it is more vibrant and dynamic, featuring the sounds of drums and the varied rhythms of singers' voices that shift in accordance with the emotional states and transformations of the mediums as they channel different figures.

In Central Vietnam, Chau Van enjoys a richer tradition compared to the North, showcasing melodies that span a wide range of pentatonic scales and demonstrate considerably more complex rhythms. Another variant of Chau Van, known as "hat tho," is associated with worship practices but is not directly linked to "len dong." This style features slower melodies that hold little contrast in pitch and stress. Through Chau Van, the artistry of Vietnamese folk music is beautifully showcased, reflecting the profound religious significance of Vietnamese rituals and customs.
