Dien Bien

A province in north-western Vietnam, Dien Bien is bordered by Lai Chau Province and Son La Province of Vietnam, Van Nam Province of China, and Phongsali Province of Laos. It consists of seven districts: Dien Bien, Dien Bien Dong, Muong Ang, Muong Cha, Muong Nhe, Tua Chua, and Tuan Giao. The capital city, Dien Bien Phu, is renowned for its significant history, particularly its victorious stance against French colonists on May 7, 1954.

Location and History

Dien Bien is one of the six mountainous provinces in Northwestern Vietnam. The province shares borders with Lai Chau and Son La provinces, along with extensive boundaries with China to the north and Laos to the west. Dien Bien City is situated in the heart-shaped Muong Thanh Valley, encircled by dense forests, towering mountains, narrow valleys, and numerous springs. The climate in Dien Bien is characterized as tropical mountainous, with temperatures occasionally dropping below 0°C in the cold season and peaking around 28°C during the hot season.

This province is recognized as one of Vietnam's ancient lands, with artifacts from the Vietnamese period of the 9th to 10th centuries discovered here. The name "Dien Bien" was bestowed by King Thieu Tri, the third monarch of the Nguyen Dynasty, in 1841. “Dien” means solid, while “Bien” signifies frontiers, coming together to translate to solid defensive frontiers.

The victory of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign on May 7, 1954, brought international attention to this rural area, marking an end to 80 years of colonial rule and feudal dominance in Vietnam. On September 26, 2003, the Vietnamese government formally recognized Dien Bien City.

Vestiges of War

The historical victory of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign is associated with various well-preserved vestiges that serve as powerful reminders of this fierce but proud battlefield during the resistance against French invaders. Among these sites, the underground hideout of French General De Castries stands as a poignant testament to the bravery of Vietnamese forces, who fought relentlessly for 54 days and nights to capture it. This historical monument has been preserved to maintain its original shape, dimensions, and structure.

Dien Bien Phu War Remnants serve as popular tourist attractions.

Hill A1, located in Muong Thanh Ward, played a critical role in controlling the entire battle during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. Standing atop Hill A1, visitors can absorb the history of the 1954 campaign through insightful guided tours, evoking a sense of experiencing the battlefield first-hand. Additionally, visiting the cemeteries of Vietnamese soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the campaign provides a poignant reflection for guests coming to Hill A1.

Another significant site is the command post of the Vietnamese army, located within the dense foliage of Muong Phang commune, where the famed General Vo Nguyen Giap and his command team orchestrated the strategy leading to the glorious victory at Dien Bien Phu.

Pha Din Pass

Local Specialties

Dien Bien enjoys a favorable climate that produces a variety of local specialties, among which "Nep Nuong" rice is the most notable. Grown in terraced fields, this unique rice variety thrives in Dien Bien's microclimate and sophisticated irrigation system, ensuring an adequate water supply for cultivation. "Nep Nuong" is used in local dishes such as "Xoi Nep Nuong," "Com Lam," and "Banh Day."

When it comes to "Banh Day," this delicacy can be found in various cities like Hanoi, but the unique version from Dien Bien, prepared by the H'mong ethnic minority using "Nep Nuong" rice through a special technique, is truly exceptional. This specialty also showcases the cultural diversity of Dien Bien, where 18 ethnic groups coexist harmoniously.

Additional famous specialties from Dien Bien include dried buffalo meat, “Mong Pe” wine, and “Sau chit” wine that await exploration by visitors.

Culture and Ethnicity

The 21 ethnic groups residing in Dien Bien significantly contribute to the region's vibrant tourism scene. Recent demographic studies indicate a population of approximately 491,046 people, with about 38% belonging to the Thai ethnic group, 30% to the H'Mong ethnic group, and only 20% to the Kinh ethnic group. Each of these major groups enriches the region with distinct traditions, festivals, and cuisines, enhancing the cultural life of this northern province.

How to Get There

While reaching Dien Bien Province by motorbike is possible, it is advisable for travelers to consider coach or airplane options due to its considerable distance from Hanoi (approximately 478 km) and challenging mountainous terrain. For those who prefer traveling by coach to soak in the scenic surroundings, high-quality sleeper buses can be boarded at stations such as Giap Bat, My Dinh, Gia Lam, or Luong Yen, with fares ranging from 350,000 to 400,000 VND. Alternatively, for a faster journey, Vietnam Airlines offers flights to Dien Bien Phu Airport, allowing travelers to reach their destination in just about one hour.
