De Castries Bunker

The underground shelter of French General De Castries remains a significant historical site located in the heart of the Dien Bien Phu Garrison in Muong Thanh, Dien Bien. Although it suffered extensive damage during the conflicts of 1954, the bunker has been preserved over the years and still showcases its original structure and layout. From any elevated point within the garrison, the bunker stands as a symbol of resilience, having withstood the Viet Minh army's siege, which lasted an intense 55 days and nights.

The bunker measures 20 meters in length and 8 meters in width, featuring four rooms designated for both sleeping and operational purposes. Historically, the French constructed a trench connecting the bunker to a blockhouse on A1 Hill using logs and sandbags. While the trench has since disappeared, remnants such as steel arches and sandbags can still be spotted atop the bunker.

This site was pivotal in history, hosting meetings between General De Castries and various notable leaders, including French Prime Minister Joseph Laniel, American President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, along with several prominent journalists. The bunker is historically significant, having witnessed the surrender of De Castries on May 7, 1954.
