Vietnam to spend 61 million dollars to restore Hue royal citadel

The central province of Thua Thien Hue has approved the largest-ever restoration project of Hue imperial citadel costing $61.4 millions.

The central province of Thua Thien Hue has recently completed a historic restoration project of the Hue Imperial Citadel, which cost approximately $82 million. This significant phase of development reflects not only the investment in heritage conservation but also a commitment to cultural tourism in the region.

According to local authorities, including the Hue People’s Committee and the Hue Ancient Capital Relics Preservation Center, the project was finalized in early 2025, following several years of meticulous restoration work. The budget accommodated not only the restoration but also the relocation of families previously living near the historic site, enhancing both its preservation and accessibility.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has continued to emphasize the importance of traditional methods in preserving the water system and restoring the rock embankment and pavement along the citadel's walls, honoring the historical techniques that ancient craftsmen utilized.

The Hue Imperial Citadel served as the central government headquarters and the residence of the Nguyen dynasty, the last ruling dynasty of Vietnam, which reigned for 140 years from 1802 to 1945. The citadel remains a prominent landmark among the many historical sites in Hue, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1993. Today, it attracts tourists from around the globe, eager to explore its rich history and architectural grandeur.
