Vietnam invests in international cruise service

In recent years, Vietnam has become a popular stop point of many cruise ships travelling all over the world, such as five-star Costa Classica, Costa Romantica, Super Star Aquarius or Pacific Venus.

It is estimated that in January of 2012, Vietnam welcomed 19 international cruises and 12 river boats carrying travelers from all over the world, mostly from France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Japan and the UK. Ha Long Bay is the most common docking locations for international tourism cruises, following by Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau and Danang City.

However, those international cruises only port in Vietnam for a few days (predominantly 2-4 days) then ships to other countries. Many of those only dock in Vietnam for a while as a transit point, and then immediately move on.

In order to enlarge the time these cruises stay in Vietnam as well as encourage them to return, Vietnam tourism firms, particularly cruise travel agents, with support of local and national authorities are conducting several projects, concentrating on enhancing the services around porting locations and providing more activities for travelers. Saigontourist is an example with a plan to construct a modern marina and entertainment complex in Ho Chi Minh City to serve cruise travelers, with total investment of about USD 64 million.

With those efforts, Vietnam’s cruise tourism industry is expected to serve more than 1 million travelers on boat by 2015, as well as large enough to compete with other nations in the region like Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia by 2020.
