Vietnam invests in international cruise service
In recent years, Vietnam has become a popular stop point of many cruise ships travelling all over the world, such as five-star Costa Classica, Costa Romantica, Super Star Aquarius or Pacific Venus.
In recent years, Vietnam has become a prominent stop for numerous cruise ships traveling worldwide, including prestigious vessels such as Costa Classica, Costa Romantica, Super Star Aquarius, and Pacific Venus, among others.
It is estimated that in January 2025, Vietnam received around 60 international cruise ships and 25 river boats carrying travelers predominantly from countries like France, Germany, Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Ha Long Bay remains the most popular docking location for international cruise tourism, followed by Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, and Da Nang City.
However, these international cruises typically dock in Vietnam for just a few days (predominantly 2-4 days) before proceeding to other countries. Most vessels use Vietnam as a transit point before continuing their journeys.
To extend the duration of these cruises in Vietnam and encourage repeat visits, tourism firms, particularly cruise travel agencies, are collaborating with local and national authorities to implement several initiatives. These initiatives focus on enhancing services at docking locations and offering more diverse activities for travelers. For instance, Saigontourist has developed plans for constructing a modern marina and entertainment complex in Ho Chi Minh City to cater to cruise passengers, with a total investment of approximately USD 64 million.
With these efforts, Vietnam’s cruise tourism industry is projected to welcome more than 1 million travelers by the end of 2025, positioning the country to compete with other regional cruise destinations such as Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.
