Extended stays for transit passengers

Transit passengers can now lengthen their stay in Vietnam from the current limit of 5 days to 15 days. The official regulation will take effect from August 14th, 2011. Those staying over the stated time can apply for a visa-on-arrival for longer stay.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, transit passengers are now permitted to extend their stay in Vietnam from the previous limit of 5 days to up to 15 days. This regulation has been in effect since August 14, 2023.

This policy is viewed as a significant change, facilitating transit tourism in Vietnam and significantly increasing the number of international travelers considering Vietnam as their next destination. Transit visitors can now fully utilize the 15-day allowance to explore the country’s renowned attractions.

The process for obtaining a transit permit in Vietnam remains straightforward. International travelers should ensure that their transit permit applications are completed through their travel agents before arriving in Vietnam. The Immigration Department has confirmed that processing will typically take no longer than one business day.

If your plans involve staying longer than the designated 15-day period or if you do not have any onward flights scheduled post-visit, you must apply for a Vietnam visa to enter and remain in the country. For more information, please visit our Visa Information page.
