Getting To Hue - Air, Road and Train

As of 2025, Vietnam Airlines continues to be the primary airline serving Phu Bai International Airport, located approximately 15 km south of Hue city center. Domestic flights connect Hue to Hanoi with up to 5 flights daily, and to Ho Chi Minh City with around 4 flights daily. The flight duration is about 1 hour for both routes, and the cost for an economy class ticket typically ranges from $50 to $70.

By Bus
Traveling by bus from Hue to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City involves an overnight journey. Open tour bus tickets are readily available in tourist areas across these cities. Passengers can opt for stops along the route, such as Quang Tri (notable for the DMZ), Quang Binh (home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park), or Nghe An (the birth province of Ho Chi Minh). The bus journey from Hue to Ho Chi Minh City also features several interesting stops, including Hoi An, Nha Trang, and Mui Ne.
By Train
Traveling by train to Hue remains a delightful option in 2025. The state-operated railway continues to connect the entire length of Vietnam from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, with multiple trains stopping at Hue daily. The most convenient options depart at 18:00 and 22:00. Express trains provide soft-berth air-conditioned compartments at competitive prices. It is advisable to purchase tickets directly at the station to avoid higher rates from resellers.

Hue can also be accessed via National Highway 1A or 1B. The Hai Van Tunnel, serving as a key connection between Da Nang and Hue, has become the longest road tunnel in Southeast Asia. Its construction has significantly reduced traffic accidents on the previously treacherous Hai Van Pass.
