Highways

As of 2025, road travel remains the most popular form of transportation in Vietnam, and the nation's highway system plays a vital role in this transportation network. Vietnam’s highway system has evolved to include over 100 highways, extending approximately 20,000 kilometers and providing crucial connections from the North to the South.

Among the most important highways are National Route 1A, which stretches from Lang Son in the North to Ca Mau in the South, National Route 5A connecting Hanoi to Hai Phong, a key northern seaport, and National Route 2 leading from Hanoi to Ha Giang. Notably, the Ho Chi Minh Road (National Route 1B) is also a significant route for those traveling through the picturesque countryside.

However, the increasing number of vehicles on the road continues to outstrip the highways' capacity. Coupled with a growing population, careless driving, and residents living near major routes, the deteriorating infrastructure has earned parts of this highway system the nickname “Hell Highway” due to the high incidence of accidents reported daily.

Despite these challenges, traveling on the highway remains essential for those looking to explore destinations beyond the city limits. As a tourist, you have numerous options for reaching further locations, particularly by renting a vehicle. To do so, you will need to present a valid driver’s license, your passport, and a security deposit.

Alternatively, you can hire a driver from a car rental agency. This option is often recommended if you prefer not to travel on a pre-arranged tour. Traffic in Vietnam can be chaotic, with many drivers frequently disregarding traffic rules, even on major highways.

When driving on the highway, maintaining good driving habits is important, but vigilance is crucial. Keep a constant lookout, especially at intersections, where many motorbike riders may not be wearing helmets and could unexpectedly cross your path. The maximum speed limit on most highways in Vietnam is 120 km/h, but always be cautious and adapt to the current traffic conditions.
