UNESCO recognizes Xoan as a world heritage

Vietnam’s Xoan singing has been added to UNESCO list of “intangible heritage” in urgent need of protection, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s National Cultural Heritage Department.

Vietnam’s Xoan singing has been recognized as a crucial part of UNESCO’s list of “intangible cultural heritage” in urgent need of protection, as reported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s National Cultural Heritage Department.

The recognition was officially granted on November 24, 2011, during the sixth session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Bali, Indonesia. Among the 23 cultural heritages from various countries—including China, Brazil, Mongolia, and the United Arab Emirates—only 10 have achieved acclaim as World Cultural Heritages by UNESCO, based on the inherent value of the heritage itself and the effectiveness of the heritage conservation action plan of the respective countries.

Vietnam’s Xoan is the only cultural practice that received unanimous approval from all members of the UNESCO evaluation committee.

Xoan singing is a traditional vocal art form originating from the northern province of Phu Tho, typically performed in front of communal houses during village festivals in spring. Singers engage in Xoan singing to honor the Hung Kings, legendary figures known for founding and ruling the nation from 2879 to 258 BC, serving as the deities of the village. The performance also expresses desires for bountiful harvests, health, and romantic courtship. Historical, social, and archaeological evidence indicates that Xoan singing has its roots dating back to the era of Vietnam's earliest rulers.

“The ministry will develop programs and concrete plans to protect and promote Xoan singing,” stated Nguyen Huu Toan, deputy head of the National Cultural Heritage Department.
