The Soul of Vietnam – a captivating series of performances showcasing Vietnamese history and culture through traditional folk music continues to delight audiences at the Ho Chi Minh Opera House. The series is ongoing, having made its debut on October 15, 2011, and remains a highlight for both locals and tourists alike.

This engaging show consists of three distinct parts with a duration of approximately 60 minutes, offering attendees a condensed journey through Vietnamese history from the ancient Hung Kings to modern times. Each segment features background music performed with traditional instruments that correspond to the specific historical eras represented.

The first section highlights the legendary story of Hai Ba Trung (the Trung sisters, c. 12-43 AD) as they lead a charge against Chinese rule on the backs of elephants. Traditional gongs and stone instruments accompany this powerful narrative, creating an immersive experience.

The second part celebrates Vietnam's rich musical heritage, showcasing a variety of folk instruments reflecting the musical diversity from the North to the South. Guided by the character Chu Cuoi, known from Vietnamese folklore, audiences embark on a musical journey exploring styles such as Hat Xam (popular in the North), Nha Nhac (the Hue Royal Court Music), and Cai Luong (Southern Opera).

Blending contemporary sounds with traditional elements, the third part features the Street Symphony by composer Nguyen Hoai Anh, depicting the vibrant daily life of modern Saigon through music that resonates with the rhythm of the city’s streets.

To enhance the cultural experience, five iconic songs from five continents are reimagined using Vietnamese folk instruments, providing a fresh and unique musical experience.

The performance series, produced by Me Kong Artists Company, is scheduled to take place monthly on the 15th and 23rd. Designed to be both entertaining and educational, especially for international audiences, the show is presented in both Vietnamese and English and is actively promoted through local travel agencies.

Tickets range from VND 100,000 to 350,000 and can be purchased at the Ho Chi Minh Opera House, located at 7 Lam Son Square, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
