Hanoi wedding banquet in the old days

Hanoi is the gathering destination of Vietnam elite in cuisine.

Hanoi continues to be a premier destination in Vietnam known for its exquisite cuisine. Over the centuries, the local gastronomy has evolved into a distinctive style. A wedding feast here serves not only as a meal but also as a narrative of cultural heritage and family pride.

Hanoians have a reputation for their discerning palates, particularly during special occasions. Meals are meticulously prepared to not just satiate hunger but to reflect the identity and values of the host families. For weddings, organizing an impressive banquet is always a priority.

Chicken is a staple in Vietnamese wedding banquets

In lavish weddings, each banquet table typically features ten dishes, as the number ten symbolizes eternal happiness in Vietnamese culture. The menu may include a dish of chicken, a pork dish shaped like flowers, Vietnamese pork sausages, cinnamon rolls, a mixed salad, and Xôi gấc (sticky rice colored with red jackfruit). Additionally, each table is adorned with four bowls of soup, which could include bamboo shoot soup, pork soup, pigeon soup with lotus seed, and a mixed soup containing various ingredients such as carrots, eggs, pork sausages, and dried seafood. Some families may opt to add extra dishes to their banquet.

Xôi gấc symbolizes rich fertility

In the weddings of more modest families, the banquet is simpler, usually consisting of six to eight dishes. Nonetheless, boiled chicken and xôi gấc remain essential, as they symbolize fertility, which is a key aspect for any bride and groom.

As the years have passed, the impact of globalization has introduced fresh ideas and styles to wedding feasts, blending Western influences with traditional Vietnamese elements. However, many Hanoians feel nostalgic for the cherished customs of the past, leading some to seek a return to the traditional practices they once upheld.
