The first ever private museum dedicated to ceramic wares in the central province of Thua Thien Hue continues to thrive in downtown Hue City as of 2025.
This unique museum is owned by archaeologist Tran Dinh Son, a prominent expert on ceramic wares from the feudal dynasties of the Ly, Tran, Le, and Nguyen, spanning from the early 11th century to the mid 20th century. He has curated an extensive collection of antique ceramic items used in daily life, including cooking utensils and dishware, which have been showcased at numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally.
The museum is now situated at 114 Mai Thuc Loan Street, a historic private mansion that once belonged to Tran Dinh Ba, a royal mandarin during the Nguyen dynasty and Tran Dinh Son’s great-great-grandfather. Following the reunification of Vietnam in 1975, this mansion served various purposes, first as a state office, then as a state-run shop, and it remained largely unused until its transformation into a museum.
