Dong Tien Festival held at the beginning of Lunar New Year

In Vietnamese perspective, the first month of a New Year (Lunar Calendar) is considered partytime, when people hanging around, enjoying exciting atmosphere of New Year and preparing for new challenging year coming up.

In Vietnamese perspective, the first month of a New Year (Lunar Calendar) is considered leisure time, when people hang out, enjoying exciting atmosphere of New Year and preparing for new coming challenging year. This could be the reason why there are a huge number of festivals and cultural events organized in different regions in Vietnam from the North to the South.

Travellers might be familiar with uproarious festivals in the beginning of Lunar New Year such as Lim Festivals in Bac Ninh, Vieng Market in Nam Dinh or Huong Pagoda Festival in Hanoi. However, some might not know that there is an attractive festival in Ham Yen (Tuyen Quang Province) in this period where Dong Tien Festival is taking place.

Dong Tien Festival has started on January 31st and finishes on January 3rd at Dong Tien relic in Ham Yen District, with the participation of thousands local people and expats. Main activities of this event are traditional rites of local minor authority and cultural performances such as folk singing or dancing. Beside, other cultural activities such as traditional games (‘’khen” contest, “con” throwing, etc) or sport contests (human chess, tugging, etc) are expected to be exciting.
In addition, there is a special market where local specialties are sold, including things like dried buffalo meat or sour meat sauce.
 
Let’s come to the event to take an opportunity to understand unique cultural values of ethnic communities in the North of Vietnam.
