Can a foreigner drive motorbike in Vietnam?

Question: I am planning to make a motorbike tour in Vietnam. Can I drive a motorbike in the country like the locals do?

Answer: You may be able to, but please note the following important information. As of 2025, the international driving permit (IDP) is not recognized for driving in Vietnam. To legally operate a motorbike or car, you will need to obtain a Vietnamese driver's license. Without a valid Vietnamese license, you may not be covered by travel insurance in the event of an accident. Furthermore, Vietnam’s traffic laws differ significantly from those in Western countries. For instance, you are required to drive on the right side of the road. If you are comfortable navigating these regulations, you can enjoy a motorbike adventure in Vietnam.
