VND15-billion project to bring Hanoi French constructions back to its original shape
Hanoi authority is commencing its first massive conservation project on French colonial architecture, focusing on ancient villas, aiming at resurrecting the original style of various French constructions in this city.
Hanoi authorities have launched a significant conservation initiative focused on French colonial architecture, particularly ancient villas. This project aims to restore the original style of various French constructions across the city. The effort is intended to rejuvenate a charming image of a “French Quarter” in Hanoi, known as the “Garden City,” which has thrived for over a century.
The project employs a variety of methods to achieve its goals, including the introduction of new policies for strict conservation of historical structures, a comprehensive plan for area reorganization, and restoration strategies for affected buildings.
According to project members, around 660 villas covering more than 400 hectares have been designated for preservation. Of these, 230 constructions have retained their original architecture, while about 430 require substantial restoration efforts due to partial or total demolition over the years.
The influence of the French colonization remains significant in various aspects of Vietnamese life, particularly in architecture within Hanoi. A report from the Department of Hanoi Planning and Architecture indicates that there are approximately 1,500 existing French villas in the city, primarily found in four districts: Dong Da, Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, and Hai Ba Trung. These villas, built in the early 20th century, showcase an array of architectural styles, such as Art Deco, Neo-Gothic, and unique French-Indochina styles.
