The historic bridge will be the topic of a lecture by Professor Douglas Jardine, Director of Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Foreign Studies at Hanoi University. Attendees of the lecture will have the opportunity to explore the life of this iconic bridge from its construction beginning in the early 20th century to the present day, as well as its significance in history, culture, and society over time.
Long Bien Bridge is an iron bridge spanning the Red River, connecting different parts of the city of Hanoi. Construction, undertaken by French colonialists, was completed in 1903, and the bridge was named after Paul Doumer, who was Governor-General of Indochina at that time. Scholars have conducted extensive research on the bridge, and Douglas Jardine is among its noted experts.
Mr. Jardine, also an accomplished photographer, has a deep appreciation for Long Bien Bridge, finding it to be a boundless source of inspiration for both his research and photographic endeavors. In recent years, he has organized several exhibitions that feature his works on Long Bien Bridge and has delivered numerous lectures focusing on this landmark of the city.
The lecture will commence at 7:00 PM on Monday, September 26, 2025, at the Cinematheque (back room), located at 22A Hai Ba Trung Street, Hanoi.
