Soc Trang

A forgotten gem of the Southern Vietnam where Kh’mer culture is rigorously preserved

Soc Trang city is approximately 240 km south of Ho Chi Minh City and about 60 km southeast of Can Tho city. The name “Soc Trang” is derived from the Khmer phrase “Srok Kh'leang,” which means “a place where silver is stored.” This city is home to a significant population of Khmer people, and alongside the predominant Kinh culture in Vietnam, distinctive Khmer cultural characteristics can be observed, particularly in the numerous Khmer pagodas scattered throughout the area.

Similar to other provinces in the Mekong Delta, Soc Trang experiences two distinct seasons: the wet season from May to November and the dry season from December to April. The best time to visit Soc Trang is during the dry season to avoid unexpected rain showers.

The main attractions in Soc Trang are its pagodas, most of which were constructed under the influence of Khmer culture. The intricate designs showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship of the Khmer people are a highlight. The most famous pagoda in Soc Trang is the Bat Pagoda (Dơi Pagoda), named for the thousands of bats that used to roost under its roofs and trees. In 2021, a fire caused considerable damage, resulting in ongoing restoration efforts. Additionally, Khleang Pagoda, one of the oldest in Soc Trang, is noted for its harmonious blend of architecture and nature. The Clay Pagoda is well-known for its clay Buddhist statues and dragon sculptures, featuring six giant candles designed to burn for 60 years. Another popular site, Chén Kiểu Pagoda, captivates visitors with its sophisticated design reflecting Chinese influences.

After exploring the pagodas, visitors can indulge in local cuisine. One must-try dish is Bún Nước Lèo Sóc Trăng, a flavorful rice noodle soup that is celebrated throughout the southern region for its taste and seasoning. A popular place to savor this dish is Cây Nhãn (Longan Tree), where diners enjoy their meal beneath the shade of a longan tree. Another local delicacy is Bánh Công, a savory snack made from a mixture of flour, mung beans, pork, and topped with a small shrimp, typically served with fresh herbs and vegetables.

Travelers can conveniently purchase bus tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Soc Trang through Mai Linh Bus Corporation, which continues to offer reliable service.
