Dau Pagoda
Dau Pagoda, located in Thuan Thanh district, Bac Ninh province, is considered the oldest Buddhist pagoda in Vietnam according to researchers.
Location
Dau Pagoda is located approximately an hour's drive from Hanoi's Old Quarter, making it an ideal destination for a refreshing morning trip away from the bustling city.
History
Historically, the area where Dau Pagoda stands was once the capital of the Giao Chi district, recognized as the political, economic, and cultural heart of Vietnam. Around 1,800 years ago, Indian monk Khau Da La arrived to spread Buddhism, establishing the first Buddhist center in Vietnam known as Luy Lau. This led to the construction of various pagodas, citadels, and marketplaces, among which Dau Pagoda holds a prominent place.
Recognized as the largest pagoda in the central Buddhist region, Dau Pagoda attracted monks from both India and China, who came to study and share Buddhist teachings with the local residents.
This ancient site has survived numerous renovations and expansions, the most significant of which occurred during the Ly and Tran dynasties. Despite the ravages of history that destroyed many structures in the region, the pagoda remains intact, showcasing traditional Oriental architecture, including a wooden block aged approximately 1,752 years, along with the two bronze "Xa Loi" bodies of monks Vu Khac Minh and Vu Khac Truong.
Architecture
In front of the pagoda stands the Hoa Phong tower, a three-story structure that originally featured six stories before part of it was destroyed. The tower houses several significant artifacts, including a large bell from the Canh Thinh Dynasty (1793), a substantial bronze gong cast during the Minh Mang Dynasty (1817), and various statues depicting gods from Buddhist mythology.
Visitor Information
Dau Pagoda hosts the annual Dau Pagoda Festival on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month. This festival is recognized as the largest Buddhist celebration in Northern Vietnam. In 2025, the festival will take place on April 18th.
The pagoda's Oriental architectural style and its remarkable antiques are sure to leave a lasting impression on any visitor. Additionally, it provides a wonderful opportunity to explore and engage with traditional Vietnamese culture, making it a must-visit for those interested in Buddhism.
