Hanoi authority is commencing its first massive conservation project on French colonial architecture, focusing on ancient villas, aiming at resurrecting the original style of various French constructions in this city.
Hanoi authority is commencing its first massive conservation project on French colonial architecture, focusing on ancient villas, aiming at resurrecting the original style of various French constructions in this city. This project is expected reproduce a charming image of a “French Quarter” in “Garden City” Hanoi which has existed for more than a hundred year.
The project consists of numerous methods to attain its objectives, including new policy to strictly conserve these historical constructions, detailed plan to re-organize the area or resurrecting plan to retorted buildings.
Information from a member of this project indicates that there are about 660 villas on a broad area of more than 400ha are listed in this project preservation targets. Among them, 230 constructions still retain its beginning architecture, while other 430 need much restoring efforts because of being partially or completely demolished over time.
French had left Vietnam large inpact on many aspects from culture to society, especially architecture in Hanoi during their dominated era. A report from Department of Hanoi Planning and Architecture shows that there are approximately 1,500 existing French villas in Hanoi, mostly concentrated in 4 four districts including Dong Da, Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem and Hai Ba Trung. These had been built in Hanoi at the beginning of 20th century with different architectural styles such as Art Deco, Neo-Gothic or unique French- Indochina style.
