VND15-billion project to bring Hanoi French constructions back to its original shape

Hanoi authority is commencing its first massive conservation project on French colonial architecture, focusing on ancient villas, aiming at resurrecting the original style of various French constructions in this city.

Hanoi authorities have launched a significant conservation initiative aimed at the restoration of French colonial architecture, with a focus on ancient villas. This project seeks to revive the original aesthetics of various French constructions throughout the city, creating a picturesque representation of the "French Quarter" in the "Garden City" of Hanoi, a historical area that has existed for over a century.

The project employs a variety of methods to achieve its goals, including the implementation of new policies for the strict preservation of these historic buildings, detailed plans for reorganizing the surrounding areas, and restoration efforts for buildings in need of significant repair.

According to a project spokesperson, around 660 villas spanning over 400 hectares are included in the conservation efforts. Of these, approximately 230 constructions maintain their original architectural integrity, while the remaining 430 require extensive restoration due to partial or complete demolitions over the years.

The impact of French colonization on Vietnam is evident in numerous facets, notably in culture and society. In Hanoi, the era of French dominance has significantly influenced the city’s architecture. A recent report from the Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture indicates that there are approximately 1,500 existing French villas in Hanoi, primarily concentrated in four districts: Dong Da, Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, and Hai Ba Trung. These buildings were constructed in the early 20th century, showcasing a range of architectural styles including Art Deco, Neo-Gothic, and the distinctive French-Indochina style.
