Vietnamese ceramics on display in the US

A Vietnamese ceramics exhibition titled “Dragon and Lotus Blossoms”, the largest ever of its kind in the US is being held at the Birmingham Museum of Art in the State of Alabama.

A Vietnamese ceramics exhibition titled “Dragon and Lotus Blossoms,” the largest ever of its kind in the United States, is currently being held at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama. The show was organized by Dr. Donald A. Wood, the museum's curator of Asian Art, and John Stevenson, a leading expert in Asian Art.

The exhibition showcases over 200 pieces of Vietnamese ceramics, including items from the 15th and 16th centuries characterized by their distinctive blue and white decorations. According to Wood, while this art form was influenced by Chinese traditions, Vietnamese artisans uniquely adapted these techniques to develop exceptional production methods, establishing themselves as the creators of some of the finest ceramics in Southeast Asia.

The complete collection is detailed in the exhibition's accompanying catalog, which contains the latest research and insightful essays authored by Stevenson, Wood, and other independent experts on Vietnamese ceramics.

Since beginning their collection of Vietnamese ceramic objects in 1970, the Birmingham Museum of Art now boasts one of the largest compilations of such artifacts in the United States. Despite the scarcity of publications in English on Vietnamese ceramics, the catalog presented by the museum for this ongoing exhibition has received high acclaim.
The exhibition is running until June 30, 2025, and has attracted a significant audience, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam.
