Vietnam International Visit Counts on the Rise
3.4 million is the number of foreign tourists travelling to Vietnam in the first seven months of 2011, according to statistics collected by Vietnam General Statistics Office.
In the first seven months of 2025, Vietnam welcomed approximately 11.5 million foreign tourists, according to data released by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam. This marks a robust recovery for the tourism sector, with a remarkable 30% increase in inbound travelers compared to the same period in 2024.
While this overall growth figure is encouraging, it is essential to note that not all sectors within tourism are experiencing the same momentum. During these seven months, the number of international tourists visiting Vietnam for leisure or familial connections saw significant growth, with over 7 million leisure tourists (an increase of 25% compared to the same timeframe in 2024) and around 1.2 million travelers visiting family and friends (up 40% from 2024).
On the other hand, the number of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) travelers has continued to decline. This downturn can be attributed to several factors, including a shortage of hotels equipped with the necessary facilities for MICE events, unprofessional event organizers, lack of engaging entertainment options within current MICE tours offered by domestic travel companies, and insufficient promotional activities for MICE tourism. Addressing these challenges requires collaborative efforts from the government, local authorities, and tourism suppliers such as hotels and travel agencies.
To better cater to MICE travelers, hotels must enhance their facilities and guarantee the availability of specialized equipment and services tailored for their guests. Additionally, tourism companies should create engaging MICE tour packages that balance work and leisure, potentially including charity gala dinners, excursions to cultural and historical sites, and free activities such as sports or visits to local markets.
Furthermore, the government should emphasize the importance of MICE tourism by introducing proactive policies that foster its growth. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism should initiate targeted promotional campaigns specifically designed to elevate MICE tourism.
It is important to highlight that the 30% growth is significantly influenced by tourists from Asian countries such as Cambodia, China, and Malaysia, rather than Western nations. This underscores Vietnam's appeal to budget-conscious travelers, with its advantages primarily stemming from its geographical proximity and stunning natural landscapes rather than luxurious accommodations or high-end services.
To attract a more affluent Western audience, Vietnam’s tourism providers must upgrade their facilities and services, implement promotional campaigns targeting Western markets, and develop tailored tour packages specifically for Western visitors. As Vietnam enters its peak domestic tourism season in July, August, and September, there is optimism that this upward trend will continue to thrive.
