This two-hour newly adapted opera, directed by Helena Rohr (Sweden), features over 150 artists, musicians, and singers from the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet. It will debut in Hanoi at the end of September 2025.
Differing from the classical opera set in Seville, Spain, this version of Carmen tells the story of a female worker (played by Vanh Khuyen) in a tobacco factory in modern-day Hanoi, framed within a contemporary social context.
In this adaptation, the origin of the characters, their occupations, behaviors, and interactions have been creatively tailored to reflect current Vietnamese society, while still preserving the essence and spirit of the original opera.
Both versions of Carmen share a common theme of struggle for freedom. The classical Carmen is depicted as a fiercely rebellious Gypsy girl yearning for absolute independence, while the contemporary Carmen embodies a poor, isolated mother battling against domestic violence.
Vanh Khuyen, a leading opera artist in Vietnam, will portray Carmen in this production. Despite the challenges faced by opera artists in Vietnam, where this art form remains relatively unfamiliar, Vanh Khuyen’s unwavering passion for opera solidifies her status as a premier performer on the Vietnamese stage.
After its successful debut last May, which garnered acclaim from critics and love from the audience, this version is returning to delight opera lovers in Hanoi this September.
