Alert: Typhoon Nesat heads towards Vietnam after battering the Philippines
After smashing the capital of Manila with waist-deep flood and severe damage and leaving behind at least 16 dead, the typhoon is going to hit the north of Vietnam from the northern east.
After causing devastation in the capital of Manila with waist-deep flooding and at least 16 fatalities, the region now braces for the impending impact of Typhoon Nesat as it approaches northern Vietnam from the northeast. Currently, Typhoon Nesat, which has been weakened to a tropical depression, exhibits average wind speeds of approximately 149 km/h and is expected to make landfall in Vietnam within the next two days. The city of Hanoi is anticipated to bear the brunt of this severe weather event.
Nesat is regarded as one of the most powerful storms to strike Vietnam in recent years, reminiscent of the catastrophic typhoon Xangsane that severely affected Da Nang in 2006. Despite this, forecasts suggest that wind speeds could decrease to around 135 km/h, which equates to the intensity of a Category 12 hurricane. Adding to the situation, strong monsoon winds are expected to impact Vietnam concurrently with Typhoon Nesat. However, if the monsoon arrives before Nesat, its effects may be mitigated.
Local authorities have initiated evacuation procedures for residents in low-lying areas and have issued warnings to fishing vessels to refrain from entering the sea.
For international travelers, it is recommended to postpone travel to Vietnam's northeastern region until next week, as Typhoon Nesat is likely to cause significant disruptions, including the cancellation of numerous tours in the north, and the resultant flooding may deter even the most adventurous visitors.
