A theater named Nón Lá (Conical Hat) dedicated to Vietnamese traditional music is going to open at Labor Culture Palace in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, in February, 2012. The two-storey building with capacity of 250 seats is expected to be a cultural attraction for foreigners interested in Vietnamese culture and music as well.

As scheduled, the theater offers music shows lasting about 50 minutes every night, starting from mid February 2012. The show will feature many genres of Vietnamese traditional music such as Ca trù, Chầu văn, Hát bội, and Nhã nhạc cung đình Huế (Hue royal music). Beside vocal performances, instrumental ones with ethnic musical instruments such as gongs, bamboo flutes and zithers are offered to audiences as well.

Unique dance performances presented at the theatre

Before every show, organizers provide audiences with flyers briefing history of each genres of music in eight languages (Vietnamese, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Filipino, Japanese, and Chinese), to give them better understanding about the music they are listening to.

Occasional talk shows about Vietnamese folk songs with participation of musical and cultural experts are expected to add more attractiveness to the program.

All seats in the theater are made of bamboo, a kind of Vietnamese traditional interior material to create a Vietnamese music space. According Huynh An Tuan, the owner of Nón Lá Traditional Theater, there will be a cuisine ward right next to the theater, which offers tourists tasty Vietnamese food in waiting time before the show.

The opening of Nón Lá Traditional Theater with daily music show gives foreign tourists in Ho Chi Minh City one more choice to enjoy Vietnamese traditional arts. Previously, Ho Chi Minh Opera House has offered foreign audiences The Soul of Vietnam – a special series of monthly performances on traditional Vietnamese music, presented in both Vietnamese and English.

Information about price is updated soon.
