The Administration of Quang Ninh Province is preparing a profile of the great King-Monk Tran Nhan Tong to seek UNESCO’s recognition as a Great Man of Culture.

Tran Nhan Tong (1258-1308) was the third emperor of the Tran Dynasty, reigning over Dai Viet from 1278 to 1293. He and his father the Retired Emperor Tran Thanh Tong was credited as the supreme commanders who led the Tran Dynasty to the victories over the Mongolian armies and established a period of peace and prosperity over the country. He abdicated his throne at the age of 35 and retreated to Yen Tu Mountain, found the Truc Lam School of Zen and practiced and taught Buddhism for the rest of his life. He also played a key role in unifying different sects of Vietnamese Buddhism into Vietnamese Zen Buddhism.

Together with the profile of King Tran Nhan Tong, two other documentations on the Tran Dynasty relics in Dong Trieu District and Yen Tu Mountain (Uong Bi District) will also be submitted to UNESCO to be considered for World Cultural Heritage Site status.
