Quang Ninh Province to seek UNESCO status for the Monk King

The Administration of Quang Ninh province is preparing a profile of the great King-Monk Tran Nhan Tong to seek UNESCO’s recognition as a Great Man of Culture.

The Administration of Quang Ninh Province is currently preparing a comprehensive dossier on the illustrious King-Monk Tran Nhan Tong for submission to UNESCO in hopes of receiving recognition as an eminent figure in culture.

Tran Nhan Tong (1258-1308) served as the third emperor of the Tran Dynasty, presiding over Dai Viet from 1278 to 1293. Alongside his father, the Retired Emperor Tran Thanh Tong, he was a pivotal leader in the military campaigns against the Mongolian invasions, which enabled the establishment of a prolonged era of peace and prosperity within the country. At the age of 35, he abdicated his throne and retreated to Yen Tu Mountain, where he founded the Truc Lam School of Zen, dedicating the remainder of his life to the practice and dissemination of Buddhism. His efforts significantly contributed to the unification of various Buddhist sects in Vietnam, leading to the emergence of Vietnamese Zen Buddhism as a prominent tradition.

In conjunction with the profile of King Tran Nhan Tong, the dossier will also include detailed documentation on other significant Tran Dynasty relics located in Dong Trieu District and Yen Tu Mountain in Uong Bi District, which are being nominated for consideration as World Cultural Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
