Phu Quoc Island tipped to become global trading hub
According to the local authorities’ maritime economic development plan for the period 2011-2015, Phu Quoc, the largest island in Vietnam, is set to become the leading eco-tourism and international trading center in Southeast Asia.
As of 2025, Phu Quoc, the largest island in Vietnam, has cemented its reputation as a premier eco-tourism and international trading hub in Southeast Asia. This transformation has been supported by a revised maritime economic development plan that outlines strategies for sustainable growth and enhanced tourism initiatives.
Phu Quoc Island, located in Kien Giang province, continues to focus investments on key industries such as seafood, fish sauce production, pepper cultivation, tourism, and pearl farming. Recent developments include substantial upgrades to the island's infrastructure, featuring high-rise residential areas, new townships, and the comprehensive renovation of Duong Dong. Notably, the Phu Quoc International Airport has successfully expanded operations, now situated approximately 7 kilometers south of Duong Dong, allowing for increased connectivity with international destinations.
Traditionally celebrated for its distinct fish sauce and high-quality black pepper, Phu Quoc has evolved into one of Vietnam's most sought-after tourist attractions. With its stunning beaches and scenic spots like Bai Truong, Bai Sao, and Ong Lang, the island offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences. Situated in the Gulf of Thailand and just 12 km south of the Cambodian coast, Phu Quoc's strategic location continues to enhance its status as a vital player in the regional tourism and business landscape, fostering trade links with neighboring countries.
