One Pillar Pagoda, a remarkable Buddhist relic in Hanoi, is recognized as one of the most unique architectural structures in Asia. This recognition was reaffirmed by the Vietnam Records Organization on October 17, 2025.
Originally named Dien Huu, which translates to “long-lasting happiness” in ancient Vietnamese, the pagoda was constructed in 1049 as a sacred space for the royal family to worship Buddha and the deities. Built from wood and stone, like many Buddhist structures of its time, its distinctive feature of standing on a single pillar in the center of a lotus-shaped pond sets it apart. This design symbolizes purity in Buddhism, representing a lotus emerging from the water.
Over its thousand years of history, the One Pillar Pagoda has undergone numerous reconstructions and repairs; however, its original architecture and decoration have remained largely intact. On May 4, 2006, the pagoda was recorded in Vietnam’s Guinness Book of Records as the structure with the most unique architecture, a title that continues to hold true in 2025.
