New projects to eliminate termites implemented in Hoi An

The Cultural Heritage Department at Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism reports that 3 billion VND (USD 144,000) from the ministry’s budget will be used to eliminate termites which have been seriously destructing numerous historical constructions in Hoi An in recent years.

The Cultural Heritage Department at Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announces that 6 billion VND (approximately USD 256,000) from the ministry’s budget will be allocated to combat termite infestations that have increasingly threatened numerous historical structures in Hoi An over the past few years.

This project follows the success of an earlier initiative aimed at mitigating termite infestations and other pests, which has proven effective in preserving the ancient buildings of this culturally rich city.

Nevertheless, the project team faces significant challenges, as their mission is not only to implement effective methods for the long-term eradication of termites but also to ensure that these methods are environmentally friendly and considerate of local communities.

Several additional projects with similar objectives are set to launch across various tourist destinations in Vietnam, particularly in three major sites: Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary, and Hue Imperial City. Notably, a significant three-year project in Hoi An is anticipated to begin next year, with a budget exceeding 40 billion VND (roughly USD 1.92 million), pending governmental approvals.

A recent study conducted by the Institute for Termite Control and Building Protection focusing on 1,521 ancient structures in Hoi An reveals that historical architecture in this picturesque town has experienced extensive damage from termites and other pests over many years. Among the surveyed buildings, approximately 20% urgently require termite treatment to prevent further deterioration.
