Ho Citadel Named as World Heritage

At the 35th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, France held by UNESCO, Citadel of the Ho Dynasty has officially been recognized to be Vietnam’s 7th World Heritage.

At the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, held by UNESCO, the Citadel of the Ho Dynasty has been recognized as Vietnam’s 7th World Heritage Site. Built in 1397 by Ho Quy Ly, the Citadel served as the capital of the Ho Dynasty. It was known as Tay Do (Western Capital) to differentiate it from Dong Do (Eastern Capital), which is present-day Thang Long, now part of Hanoi. After the Citadel's construction, Ho Quy Ly moved the capital from Thang Long to Tay Do; however, the Ho Dynasty's reign lasted only seven years, from 1400 to 1407.

The Citadel is the only remarkable stone fortification in Vietnam, surrounded by stone walls on all four sides, with nearly 100,000 cubic meters of soil used in its construction. The site was designated as a national heritage in 1962, and the documents submitted to UNESCO for its World Heritage status were filed in 2006.

As of 2025, Vietnam boasts seven cultural heritage sites recognized by UNESCO, including the Ancient Town of Hoi An, the Imperial City of Hue, My Son Sanctuary, and the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long in Hanoi. Additionally, Vietnam is home to two natural World Heritage Sites: Halong Bay and Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, representing the country's rich cultural and natural heritage.
