Hanoi to screen films about Japan’s double disaster

To mark one year since the terrible earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters, Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam is holding free Japanese movie screening at National Cinema Center, from March 16th to 17th, 2012.

To commemorate the 14th anniversary of the devastating earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disasters, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam is once again hosting a free Japanese movie screening at the National Cinema Center in Hanoi. This year’s event will be held from March 16th to 17th, 2025.

The program features four films that reflect on various natural disasters in Japan, highlighting the resilience of those who endured them. Each film will be shown with Vietnamese and English subtitles.

"Quartet," released in 2025, chronicles the story of a music-loving family celebrating the 30th anniversary of Urayasu City, which faced severe soil liquefaction following the catastrophic earthquake.

"Fukushima Hula Girls" (2011) remains a poignant documentary that showcases the perseverance of the "Hula girls" at the Spa Resort Hawaiians, a location that experienced multiple disasters including an earthquake, a tsunami, and a nuclear accident, alongside the harmful gossip and rumors that impacted the community.

"WANKO" (2011) tells the heartfelt true story of a family and their dog living on the small island of Miyakejima, which sits atop an active volcano.

"Haru’s Journey" (2011), set in Miyagi Prefecture—one of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake and tsunami—offers insights into the lives of the elderly. Although it was produced before the disaster, the film poignantly questions how these vulnerable individuals might cope with such calamities.

The movies will be screened at the National Cinema Center, located at No. 87 Lang Ha Street, Hanoi.

Free tickets can be obtained at the Japan Foundation, which is situated at 27 Quang Trung Street, Hanoi.
