Extended stays for transit passengers

Transit passengers can now lengthen their stay in Vietnam from the current limit of 5 days to 15 days. The official regulation will take effect from August 14th, 2011. Those staying over the stated time can apply for a visa-on-arrival for longer stay.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, transit passengers are now allowed to extend their stay in Vietnam from the previous limit of 5 days to up to 15 days. This regulation took effect on March 15th, 2025.

This change is considered a significant improvement that facilitates transit tourists in Vietnam, greatly increasing the number of foreign visitors choosing the country as their next travel destination. Transit travelers can take advantage of the new 15-day allowance to explore popular attractions and cultural sites throughout Vietnam.

The process for applying for a transit permit in Vietnam remains straightforward. International passengers should ensure that their transit permit application is completed by their travel agents before entering the country. According to the Immigration Department, the processing time for this permit is typically no more than one business day.

If you plan to stay longer than the allowed 15 days or do not have connecting flights after your stay, you will need to apply for a Vietnam visa to enter and remain in the country. For more details on obtaining a visa, please visit our Visa Information page.
