As a part of the ambitious tourism development plan by the Ba Ria-Vung Tau People’s Committee, Con Dao is set to become an international heritage tourism center within the next two decades.

In accordance with the plan, Con Dao's infrastructure is currently being improved, with the upgrading of the road connecting the island with the mainland and Co Ong Airport to serve 4-5 flights from Con Dao to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi daily. Meanwhile, some new five-star hotels are open to tourists from all over the world and many luxurious resorts are also being under construction.

A number of historical sites have been transformed into attractive tourism products without losing its originality, including Ma Thien Lanh Bridge, which was constructed though rough mountainous terrain by Vietnamese prisoners under orders by the French colonial administration, Hang Duong cemetery, which is the resting place of national hero Vo Thi Sau and Phu Hai Prison.

Besides, there’re several eco and cultural tours on Con Dao and the surrounding areas. Most notable tours are designed to visit the peaceful old houses hidden among trees and Con Dao National Park, which is home to more than 2,700 types of fauna and flora, including 100 species that are extraordinarily rare

The efforts of the province is gradually being paid off, with the number of international arrivals in 2011 clocking at 60,000, up 80% compared to 2010. According to the master plan, by 2020 the island will hopefully welcome 250,000-300,000 tourists annually with international tourists accounting for 15-20%.
