Con Dao set to become a center for sea tourism and marine service
As a part of the ambitious tourism development plan by the Ba Ria-Vung Tau People’s Committee, Con Dao is set to become an international heritage tourism center within the next two decades.
As part of the ambitious tourism development plan by the Ba Ria-Vung Tau People’s Committee, Con Dao has increasingly established itself as an international heritage tourism center in the last several years. By 2025, the island is steadily advancing towards its goal of becoming a premier global destination.
In accordance with the development plan, Con Dao's infrastructure has seen significant enhancements. The road connecting the island to the mainland has been upgraded, and Co Ong Airport now accommodates between 6 to 8 flights daily to and from major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Additionally, several new five-star hotels and luxury resorts have opened, catering to a diverse array of international tourists.
A number of historical sites have been effectively transformed into captivating tourism experiences while maintaining their original essence. These include the Ma Thien Lanh Bridge, constructed through rugged mountainous terrain by Vietnamese prisoners under French colonial rule, Hang Duong Cemetery, the final resting place of national hero Vo Thi Sau, and Phu Hai Prison, which now serves as a poignant reminder of the country's history.
Moreover, a variety of eco-friendly and cultural tours are available in Con Dao and its surrounding areas. Noteworthy excursions include visits to serene old houses nestled among lush foliage and explorations of Con Dao National Park, which is home to over 2,700 species of flora and fauna, with approximately 100 species classified as exceptionally rare.
These continued efforts by the province are showing promising results. In 2023, the number of international arrivals reached approximately 120,000, reflecting a growing interest in the destination. According to the tourism master plan, Con Dao aims to welcome between 500,000 to 600,000 tourists annually by 2030, with international visitors expected to make up about 20-25% of this figure.
