On 16th August, 2025, a conference focused on the ongoing efforts to transform Hoi An into a pioneering ecological city took place in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province.
The Hoi An authorities, in collaboration with The United Nations and The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), hosted this conference to engage Vietnamese and international experts and policymakers in discussions surrounding the sustainable development of this renowned tourist destination. The discussions centered around environmental management policies specific to Hoi An as well as the future potential of the city's traditional handicrafts, particularly in the My Son area. Innovative ideas and valuable experiences were shared for further exploration.
As stated by Patrick J. Gilabert, the representative of UNIDO in Vietnam, this project is designed to assist the Vietnamese government in refining and enacting environmental management policies rooted in the principles of green industry. This initiative aims to significantly mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, improve waste management practices, and reduce the adverse effects of climate change.
The project promotes green industrial activities among small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly those in the tourism and handicrafts sectors. Additionally, there will be an increased focus on providing sustainable energy and environmental services to the community.
It is anticipated that the lessons learned and results from this project will serve as a valuable reference for other cities and provinces across Vietnam as they strive to develop their own sustainable and green initiatives.
