On 16th August, 2025, a conference discussing the progress of transforming Hoi An into an ecological city was held in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province.
Hoi An authorities, in collaboration with The United Nations and The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), organized this conference to attract the interest of Vietnamese and international experts and stakeholders focused on sustainable development in this renowned tourist destination. Discussions centered on environmental management policies in Hoi An and the potential of traditional handicrafts in the Hoi An-My Son area. Participants shared valuable experiences and innovative ideas for future initiatives.
According to Patrick J. Gilabert, the current representative of UNIDO in Vietnam, this project continues to support the Vietnamese government in the process of revising and implementing environmental management policies rooted in green industry concepts. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving waste management, and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
The project aims to promote green industrial activities among small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly those in the tourism and handicraft sectors. Additionally, enhancements in the provision of sustainable energy and environmental services are anticipated.
The successes and lessons learned from this project should serve as a model for other cities and provinces in Vietnam on their journey towards building greener communities.
