Lan Ha Bay

The secluded yet electic

Tucked away in the east of Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay remains a hidden gem, geologically linked to the renowned Ha Long Bay. Its lesser-known status makes it a sanctuary for travelers seeking serenity, unspoiled wilderness, and endless fun under the sun. Over the years, Lan Ha Bay has firmly established itself as an appealing alternative to its more famous neighbor.

Traveling from Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay is quite straightforward. You can take a bus or train to Hai Phong, and then enjoy a hydrofoil ride to Cat Ba Island. From there, various cruises offer tours to explore the beauty of Lan Ha Bay. Although there isn’t a dedicated airport in Lan Ha Bay, the nearest options are Van Don International Airport and Cat Bi International Airport. From either airport, you can easily catch a taxi to the bay.

Tra Bau Fishing Village is one of the most pristine spots in the area, perfect for fishing, swimming, and kayaking to explore corners that larger boats cannot reach. Van Boi Beach is another hidden gem, featuring gentle waves, soft white sand, and crystal-clear waters that invite tourists to sunbathe and dive in the vibrant coral reefs.

Bright Cave is a stunning natural attraction, resembling a hidden lake bordered by rock formations. Tourists often explore this nature theatre via bamboo boats. Additionally, Cai Beo Floating Village, with a history spanning over 7,000 years, is a must-visit. This is Vietnam’s largest ancient fishing village where early inhabitants relied on fishing and scallop gathering for their livelihoods.

Monkey Island serves as an ideal stopover for visitors looking to enjoy the company of monkeys playing along the beach. It’s highly recommended to plan a two or three-day tour to fully appreciate all these activities without feeling rushed.

The weather in Lan Ha Bay is most pleasant from March to June and October to November. The months of December through February can be less appealing due to overcast and drizzly conditions. From July to September, temperatures rise, signaling peak domestic tourism, so it’s advisable to book all transportation in advance and expect larger crowds during this busy season.
