Meridian Gate has officially reopened after nearly a decade of restoration
Renowned as the symbol of Hue, Meridian Gate (Ngo Mon) reopened to visitors in early 2021 after a comprehensive restoration that spanned several years. Within the citadel of Hue, Meridian Gate, also referred to as the South Gate, is an iconic structure from the Nguyen Dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of Vietnam. This elaborate construction features a brick foundation and a stunning wooden pavilion with terracotta tiles, known as Lau Ngu Phung (Pavilion of Five Phoenixes).

Historically, the structure suffered significant damage over the years due to environmental factors and conflicts. The restoration project for Meridian Gate commenced in 2012, spearheaded by the Hue Monuments Conservation Center. It unfolded in two phases: the first phase from 2012 to 2015, followed by the second phase from 2016 to 2019, with total investment exceeding 80 billion VND. In addition to structurally renovating the gate, the project also aimed to revive certain rituals from the Nguyen Dynasty, such as the ceremony for Proclamation of Doctors’ Lists in the national examinations held at Lau Ngu Phung and the Changing of Guards ceremony in front of Meridian Gate. Since its reopening, Meridian Gate has attracted countless visitors from across the nation, eager to appreciate its historical and cultural significance.
