Halloween Celebration in Vietnam

Halloween of 2011 is on Monday and of 2012 is on Wednesday, October 31st.

While Halloween is traditionally considered a Western celebration, its popularity has grown significantly in Vietnam over the years. Many Vietnamese now embrace Halloween festivities, particularly in urban areas. The cultural belief that souls may return to visit their families aligns with certain Halloween themes, making it a unique celebration within the local context.

Characterized by the iconic pumpkin with a carved face, Halloween parties have become increasingly common in Vietnam's major cities. These events are often hosted in areas popular with backpackers, particularly in cafes, bars, and restaurants.

Halloween parties feature a variety of activities, with costume wearing being the most popular. Many cafes screen horror movies leading up to midnight, creating an immersive atmosphere. Bars and restaurants often offer enticing Halloween-themed menus, featuring dishes like “blood soup,” which is a tomato-based soup, and sweet treats like “Tombstoned biscuits” adorned with R.I.P inscriptions.

Upscale hotels frequently host buffet parties priced between $25 and $50, complete with live entertainment from singers and dancers to elevate the festivities. Although Halloween is celebrated in a commercialized manner in Vietnam, the primary aim of the night remains to enjoy the fun and playful spirit that the holiday brings.
